SUBSTANCE: method comprises steps of drawing strip around driven drum through abrasive powder compacted before cleaning zone, subjecting strip in cleaning zone to simultaneous vertical and horizontal vibrations in two mutually normal directions inclined by angle alpha=0-90 deg and angle beta=0-90 deg and between cleaning zones subjecting strip to bending and tension with epsi=0-5%. At forming abrasive layer, at first layer of soft material is rolled on drum surface, such as pine sawdust layer with adhesive ingredient having thickness 2-3 mm. Said layer is rolled under pressure up to MPa and then onto it layer of abrasive material with thickness 1-2 mm is pressed under pressure up to 200 MPa. Apparatus for performing the method includes drums, conveyers and scale breaker. Rotary devices are arranged between drums. Drums are provided with mechanisms for subjecting strip to lengthwise and crosswise vibration. EFFECT: enhanced quality of strip cleaning due to elimination of continuous notches and grooves and due to uniform roughness of strip surface in longitudinal and cross directions. 3 cl, 4 dwg
