PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a 4-cyano-3-hydroxybutyric acid ester which is an intermediate in an improved method for synthesizing (5R)-1,1- dimethylethyl 6-cyano-5-oxo-hexanoate. SOLUTION: This method for producing a compound represented by formula II (wherein, R is a 1-10C alkyl, allyl or benzyl) comprises treating a compound represented by formula V (wherein, X is a leaving group; and R is as defined above) with a compound represented by formula IV, R1-CN [R1 is a tetraalkylammonium, silver, copper (I), copper (II), an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal] at a temperature ranging from 0 deg.C to the refluxing temperature of a solvent in the solvent and obtaining the compound represented by formula II.
