PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve problems of a conventional duplex reader, or the poor smoothness in carrying resulted from the reverse carrying of a document in a switchback passage for reverse read, which causes the damage of a document and obstructs the higher speed read. SOLUTION: The reverse carrying passage for reverse read is formed into a loop-like carrying passage having no switchback, and the document is carried in the direction opposite to the document carrying direction in the first surface read to perform the second surface read.
