A Stirling Engine in which a free displacer piston (12, Fig 1) reciprocates in a cylinder block 10, has a flexible non-metallic diaphragm 16 clamped between radially extending annular flanges 20,21 of the engine housings 10,22 by bolts 23. Spacers 24 are provided between the flanges 20,21 to maintain a predetermined distance between the flanges and to ensure a correct and equal tightening of the bolts 23. A constraining band 25 (eg. of steel) covers the peripheral edge of the diaphragm 16 to prevent bulging and to improve sealing. The spacing may be achieved by providing tubular metal spacers 24 around each bolt 23, or by positioning the constraining band 25 between the flanges 20,21. The constraining band 25 may be formed as part of the flange 21. |
