PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize the deterioration of autofocus, autoiris, etc., by improving sensitivity by external adding of an image pickup element when lightness of some degree is secured though it becomes dark to require high sensitive photographing. SOLUTION: An image pickup device consists of an image pickup element 1, A/D 4, a crystal oscillator 12, an SDRAM 16, an iris/focus detector 17, a microcomputer 18, a lens 19, etc. Then, this device is also provided with a means for executing reading from the element 1 at a normal rate and adding it to a past video outside of the element to improve sensitivity and a means for prolonging an exposing time at the element 1. When lightness of some degree is secured though it becomes dark to require sensitive photographing, sensitivity is improved by external adding of the element 1. Then, only when it is so dark that a sufficient S/N cannot be secured by external adding, the exposing time at the element 1 is prolonged to improve sensitivity.
