PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an increase in the size of a device and to accurately discriminate various coins which are made of the same material and different in thickness. SOLUTION: In a coin path 2, an oscillation coil 3A is provided which produces and applies an oscillation magnetic field of specific frequency to one flank of a rolling coin 1 and an oscillation coil 3B which produces and applies an oscillation magnetic field of the same frequency and intensity with the oscillation coil 3A to the other flank of the coin is provided opposite to the oscillation coil 3A. Then the oscillation coils 3A and 3B are connected in series to calculate the sum of respective impedance variation quantities when the coin passes between the oscillation coils as the sum of the oscillation voltages of the series- connected oscillation coils 3A and 3B, thereby discriminating whether or not the thrown-in coin is adequate and its kind from the calculated value and a previously set value.
