PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a piston and a shoe of a swash plate type hydraulic rotary machine with excellent productivity. SOLUTION: This manufacturing method comprises a machining step where a piston 10 and a shoe 20 are manufactured by machining a quenched and tempered heat-treated material, a connecting step where a projected spherical surface part 21 of the shoe 20 is fitted to a recessed spherical surface part 11 of the piston 10 and the tip part of the recessed spherical surface part 11 of the piston 10 is reduced in diameter and connected rotatably, and a heat treatment step where the connected piston 10 and shoe 20 are soft nitrided by gas to provide a nitrided layer on the surface of the piston 10 and the shoe 20.
