PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily device the control value of a reading start position in each scanning direction by reading the images included in prescribed ranges set before and after a prescribed reading reference position to store them in a memory, displacing the image of a prescribed area of the stored images in both horizontal and vertical directions and displaying the displaced image to calculate the difference between the image that is displayed first at the initial value and the displaced image. SOLUTION: A carriage is moved to a prescribed position according to the output of a sensor 2. Then the carriage is moved by an extent equal to a distance that is set by adding a distance prescribed by a reading reference position to a distance prescribed in the direction of the reading reference position through this reference position. Then the reading operations are carried out in a line sequential way while the carriage is moved in the opposite direction by a prescribed distance, and the read image data are stored in sequence into a store memory 10. A prescribed area is displayed at a graphic display part 8 in response to a case where a prescribed reading reference position is set on the basis of a position that is corrected in response to both horizontal and vertical scan correction value which are stored in a correction value storage part 7.
