PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent mis-video-recording due to dissidence of mode setting between a video changeover device and a recorder connected to the video changeover device. SOLUTION: A video recording/reproduction detection means 105 of this video changeover device discriminates an operating state (video recording/ reproduction) from a video output signal of a video recorder 118. The detection means 105 discriminates the operating state depending on discrimination of coincidence/dissidence between an ID signal superimposed on a video image and an ID signal in a reproduced signal given to the changeover device at reproduction or depending on the comparison between an internal synchronizing signal of the changeover device and a synchronizing signal separated from the reproduction signal. The discrimination result automatically selects mode setting of the video changeover device 101.
