PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of accurately controlling the width of a magnetic pole even when the magnetic pole width is reduced and providing sufficient overwriting characteristics, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The position of a throat height zero(TH0) is defined by the end surface T1 of an upper pole tip 27a formed on a flat surface. At the time of forming the upper pole tip 27a, the TH0 position is accurately decided, and a throat height contributing to the recording characteristics of the thin film magnetic head is decided highly accurately. The magnetic connection of the upper pole tip 27a with an upper magnetic pole 27c is carried out with a sufficient contact area provided by connecting parts 27a (3) R and 27a (3) L separated in a width direction. A magnetic flux propagation loss due to magnetic flux saturation which is caused when a magnetic flux flows from the area of a large magnetic volume into the area of a small magnetic volume is reduced.
