PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve S/N of a high density magnetic recording medium on which recording and reproducing is executed by a MR head. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium in which a magnetic layer containing at least ferromagnetic powder and a binder is provided on a nonmagnetic supporting body and which is used for reproduction by the MR head, thickness of the magnetic layer is 0.02 to 0.08μm, product of residual magnetic flux density Br (unit T) of the magnetic layer and magnetic layer thickness (t) (unitμm), t×Br is 50×104 to 160×104 and coercive force of the magnetic layer is >=166 KA/m (2100 Oe).
