PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely erase only a picture in a specific area by precisely detecting the specific area of a finger area, etc., in a read picture even when an index, etc., exists at the end part of the read original in a picture reader. SOLUTION: An area of luminance equal to or lower than prescribed luminance to be the candidate of a finger area is detected from read picture data to discriminate whether or not luminance distribution within this area has a specific pattern. Since the pattern of the luminance distribution in a low luminance area is difference between the area of a finger to press an original and its shadow and the area of an index, etc., the area of the finger and its shadow and the area of the index, etc., can be discriminated from each other. Thus, a finger area 60 in read image can precisely be detected.
