PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize display which is bright and whose contrast ratio is high by making a main light beam out of the light beams incident on a polarized light separating plane at a specified angle and emitting it nearly perpendicularly from an emitting surface. SOLUTION: The light beam is made incident on the polarized light separating plane 105 of a PBS 104 at an angleαexceeding 45 deg., and the white light beam reflected selectively in terms of polarized light is made incident on a Phillips type prism 106 being a color separation element, then the incident light beam is successively separated to the light beams of R, G and B, which are respectively made incident on corresponding reflection type liquid crystal display elements 107-R, 107-G and 107-B. The respective light beams of R, G and B reflected after their polarization directions are modulated are reflected toward the prism 106, where the light beams are color-synthesized, and made incident perpendicularly from the emitting surface 104b of the PBS 104. The light beam modulated to be P polarized light is transmitted through the plane 105 and projected to a screen by a projection lens 108 through a polarizing plate 109.
