The differential for drive shafts has two epicyclic gear trains each rotated from an external drive (19). Each drive has a left shaft and a right shaft with the rotation transmitted to a third idler which is connected directly, or indirectly to one of the side shafts (1,4). This allows rotation of the side shafts in one or other direction. The left and right shafts can be connected by gearing for rotation in the same sense or by a gear train for inverted rotation.
