PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optical system for white coherent light which considers the influences of dispersion such as color aberration by including a procedure of selecting a material having each specified range of first and second order differential coefficients in the changes of the refractive index according to the wavelength region to be used for the material of a graded index lens. SOLUTION: When an optical system for white coherent light is designed by developing an unknown material, first, the composition of a graded index lens is determined (S1). The distribution of the refractive index is calculated in the wavelength region to be used by the method of Huggins and others (S2). The first-order differential coefficient dn/dλand the second-order differential coefficient d2n/dλ2 in the changes of the refractive index are calculated according to the wavelength region to be used (S3). Whether the calculated values of the first-order differential coefficient dn/dλand the second-order differential coefficient d2n/dλ2 in the changes of the refractive index according to the wavelength region to be used are in the respective specified ranges or not is decided (S4). If the calculated values are in the respective specified ranges as the decision result, the optical system is designed based on an usual design method (S5). Then the performance of the designed optical system is decided (S6).
