PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve visibility at the time of display switching, in the case where a character board divided into plural character board regions and illuminated and a light-emitting type common pointer for indicating a scale on each character board region are provided and the scale indicated by the pointer on a character board region for a selected display target are read through a smoke lens on the front of a meter. SOLUTION: This meter is equipped with plural exclusive lamps 21a, 21b for illuminating each character board region and a lamp driving circuit for character board illumination 32 for operating selectively either lamp 21a, 21b in response to a display selection signal. An interruption control means 33 for interrupting driving of the lamps 21a, 21b corresponding to the time required for movement of a pointer 10 to another character board region in response to the display selection signal is attached to the lamp driving circuit for character board illumination 32.
