PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain an adaptive operation of an equalizer even in the case of routine communication. SOLUTION: In a transmitter 1, a modulation means 1a modulates data going to be sent from the transmitter 1, an addition means 1b adds a Cyclic Prefix to the modulated signal, and a transmission means 1c transmits the resulting signal via a subscriber line 2. In a receiver, a reception means 3a receives data transmitted from the transmitter 1, and a processing means 3b being an equalizer processes the received data so that the effect received by the transmission of the data through the subscriber line falls within the Cyclic Prefix. Then a target channel 3c has an object characteristic targeted when the processing means 3b conducts adaptive processing. A 1st adaptive means 3d adjusts both a target channel and the processing means in the case of initialization to conduct adaptive processing. A 2nd adaptive means mainly regulates a processing means 3b in the case of routine communication to conduct adaptive processing.
