PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To propagate light from a light source to a near field optical head without loss and to obtain a high S/N ratio and information transfer rate, by arranging the light source in the upper part of the near field optical head and making a nearly linear shaped head light-guiding mechanism follow the scanning of the near field optical head. SOLUTION: In the information recording and reproducing device 1, incident light from a light source 2 is guided to a near field optical head 4 through a head light guiding mechanism 5. The light source 2 is arranged perpendicularly against the surface of a recording medium 3, with the head light guiding mechanism 5 shaped approximately linearly. The near field optical head 4 scans the surface of the rotating recording medium 3, recording and/or reproducing information by an interaction with near field light. An incident light linearly propagates from the light source 2 to a minute aperture of the near field optical head 4; hence, incident light loss is reduced to a extremely low level. |
