PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type picture display device provided with a polarized light changing means using absolute minimum polarized light separating performance. SOLUTION: This projection type display device 100 is provided with the polarized light changing means 300 changing non-polarized the light from a light source 201 to linearly polarized light. In the device 100, the light is transmitted through liquid crystal panels 214, 215 and 216 and a picture on the liquid crystal panel 214 is enlarged and formed on a screen 102 by a projection lens 218. The means 300 is provided with a polarized light separating element 301 provided with a phase type hologram 320 and separating the light made incident from the light source 201 to every polarized light component when the light is made incident from the light source 201 and emitting it in a different direction, a reflection mirror 302 for making either polarized light and the other polarized light in nearly the same direction and a polarized light rotating element 303 for changing either polarized light and the other polarized light to the same polarized component. |
