PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a recording and reproducing device optimiz ing simply intensity of a laser beam at the time of recording a signal and intensity of a laser beam at the time of reproducing a signal. SOLUTION: A signal is recorded in a magneto-optical recording medium 10 by varying intensity of pulse light emitted from an optical head 30 at the time of recording, the recorded signal is reproduced by the optical head 30. And a control circuit 102 discriminates optimum intensity of pulse light based on an error rate of a reproduced signal, and records the optimum intensity in the magneto-optical recording medium 10. When a signal is recorded initially in the magneto-optical recording medium 10, intensity of pulse light is optimized, a signal is recorded using pulse light having the optimized intensity, after second time, optimum intensity recorded in the magneto-optical recording medium 10 is read out, and signal recording is performed using pulse light having the read out optimum intensity. On the other hand, signal reproduction from the magneto-optical recording medium 10 is performed by optimizing intensity of a laser beam for every generation of a laser beam.
