The apparatus includes an X-ray source and a two-dimensional detector which can both pivot in common so that they oscillate about a system axis. The source and detector and also an object support can be moved relative to each other in a straight line in the direction of the system axis. A computer reconstructs images of the object from the output signals from the detector. The X-ray source and detector may be arranged on opposite sides of C-shaped carrier whose centre line corresponds with the system axis, and which can be pivoted to oscillate about its centre line.
