The circuit includes a starter, and a ballast (4) connected to a voltage supply. A noise suppressor is connected between a wire leading to the gas discharge lamp and a wire leading from the lamp, to suppress noise caused by square wave drive voltages. The noise suppressor includes a current-compensating choke (D), connected between the ballast and the starter, or between the starter and the gas discharge lamp.
