PURPOSE: A thresholdless analog ferroelectric liquid crystal display device is provided so that efficiency can be improved, by applying a thresholdless analog ferroelectric liquid crystal having a high response speed and wide field angle, when a voltage drop due to spontaneous polarization is relaxed. CONSTITUTION: A pixel electrode and a common electrode are overlapped on a plane. Therefore, an amount of liquid crystal positioned on an electric field region does not directly influence on an image. In order to reduce the amount of liquid crystal, an interval of substrates is decreased, or the overlapping portion of the pixel electrode and the common electrode is formed on an opening unit of the common electrode. For example, the common electrode(23) is not formed on the whole surface of an upper substrate, but on the opening unit(14) of the pixel unit. The common electrode(23) must have the identical potential to the potential of the common electrodes formed on the opening units of the adjacent pixel units.
