PURPOSE: The apparatus and method for processing the fault of a switching system using a fault reporting ring is provided to rapidly report the fault of a switching system to a maintenance manager without additional costs by outputting the hardware and software fault information of the switching system to a fault output device and, at the same time, controlling ring power supply for a subscriber terminal appointed as a fault reporting terminal the status and class of fault information so that a fault reporting ring having an interrupt cycle different from generic rings can be provided to the fault reporting terminal. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for processing the fault of a switching system using a fault reporting ring is provided with a fault detection part(21), a fault output part(22), a fault terminal processing part(23), a subscriber ring control part(24), a fault output device(25) and a fault reporting terminal(26). The fault output part(22) outputs fault information transferred from the fault detection part(21) to the fault output device(25) and the fault terminal processing part(23) at the same time. The fault terminal processing part(23) forms ring control information according to the status(alarm or fault) and class(critical, major or minor) of transferred fault information and transfers it to the subscriber ring control part(24). The subscriber ring control part(24) controls ring power supply for the fault reporting terminal(26) according to transferred ring control information.
