The front layer (1) is partially-reflective layer. Behind it is a display layer (2), on which information is seen when illuminated actively or passively. Light incident on the reflective layer from the front, is largely reflected, as from a mirror. Illumination of the display layer, reveals its information to a viewer at the front.
