A liquid crystal shutter comprising a liquid crystal element including a nematic liquid crystal held between a pair of substrates and having a twist angle of 180 DEG to 260 DEG , a pair of polarizers disposed to sandwich the crystal element, and a phase difference plate in one of the gaps between the liquid crystal element and the polarizers, wherein an angle formed between respective absorbing axes of the pair of polarizers is in a range of 80 DEG to 100 DEG , an angle formed between the absorbing axis of one of the polarizers and a middle liquid crystal molecular direction of the liquid crystal element is in a range of 40 DEG to 60 DEG , and the delay phase axis of the phase difference plate is disposed in almost parallel with the middle liquid crystal molecular direction of the liquid crystal element. In addition, they are oriented in a thickness direction and at different gradient angles on a discotheque film, with the orientation direction of the phase difference plate kept almost orthogonal to the middle liquid crystal molecular direction of the liquid crystal element. Further, the liquid crystal shutter may be provided with first and second phase difference plates that are oriented in a thickness direction and at different gradient angles on a phase difference plate.
