PURPOSE: A method for performing an automatic configuration of a stackable system is provided to make the stackable system automatically carry out the configuration, when a network equipment is used as the stackable system. Therefore a user can not have to know information relating to the configuration. CONSTITUTION: A managed system(50) initializes a self system, and informs lower unmanaged systems(60,70) of the number of self switch modules. The unmanaged systems(60,70) initialize self systems by using SEEPROMs(Serial Electrically Erasable and Programmable ROMs)(62,72), and calculate the number of final switch modules, then inform the managed system(50) of the calculated final switch modules. The managed system(50) initializes a self device number, and delivers acknowledge request messages as the number of the final switch modules. Each switch module of the unmanaged systems(60,70) receives the acknowledge request messages, and delivers acknowledge messages. The managed system(50) makes out a device management list relating to the switch modules for delivering the acknowledge messages, and delivers an initialization message to initialize the entire unmanaged systems(60,70). The managed system(50) confirms whether the entire unmanaged systems(60,70) are initialized, and enables the switch modules.
