The invention relates to a method for manufacturing of matches and the like comprising a support material of bamboo and an ignitable part, especially a matchhead. The method involves the treatment of bamboo with suitable agents in order to alter the structure of the material to permit proper impregnation of the bamboo. The treatment of bamboo is preferably performed by a detergent solution and/or a solution of inorganic bases.
