The diagnosis system has a recycling valve in the exhaust gas return loop with an electronic controller. The diagnosis unit monitors the flow of exhaust gas in the return loop when the control valve is opened and establishes whether the frequency of misfires increases when the valve is opened beyond a first position to a second position. A defect signal for the recirculation is given if the difference in misfire frequency between the two positions is less than a certain threshold. The misfire frequency is established on the basis of irregular engine running and also on measured combustion chamber pressures. ADVANTAGE - Evaluates condition of EGR system and generates defect signal dependent on misfire frequency.
