Each web (10) fed from a roll changer (1) runs through several work units. At first for each web, machine or production guide lines are preset for the web tension in the clamping sections upstream of the printing unit (3) and for leading the tractor units (13-17) mounted downstream of the printer unit relative to the clamping position set in front each time so that when the machine is started up the web tension is controlled in the clamping sections downstream of the printer unit. In the event of any deviation in the guide line value it can be regulated by changing the setting of at least one clamping section.
