The fault current protection device has a detection unit (2) for detecting a fault current in an electrical conductor (10) within a conductor network (11), for operation of a current cut-out device (4) with an electronic switch element, for interrupting the current through the current conductor. The switch element of the current cut-out device may be provided by a SiC semiconductor element, providing an overcurrent and/or thermic overload protection function.
