Electro-luminescent displays based on a unit (3) having an electro-luminescent layer (EL1,EL2) arranged between two switched electrodes (E1,E2) are generally designed to provided a high degree of functionality and variable color display, without incurring excessively high design and development costs. The electro-luminescent display (1,4) is provided with at least one further unit consisting of an electro-luminescent layer (EL2,EL2') arranged between two electrodes (E2,E3). The units (2,3) are arranged one over the other to form a layered body, but the further electro-luminescent display (4) which corresponds in its layered arrangement to the electro-luminescent display (1) has its electro-luminescent layers (EL1', EL2') mutually offset in chess-board manner.
