The invention relates to a spanner for screws or nuts with a flat base body (1) that serves as a handle and with at least one recess (3). Ring-shaped or partially ring-shaped jaws (4) are formed on the edge of said recess. The distance (d2) between said jaws is selected in such a way that the jaws (4) can be engaged with the edges (11) of a head pertaining to a polygonal screw or a polygonal nut (9) in a positive fit. The aim of the invention is to prevent that the jaws (4) are unintentionally removed from the level of engagement and from the engagement edges (11) of a nut (9). To this end, the recess (3) is configured in an at least partially stepped manner in the vertical direction in relation to the ring or partial ring level. The spanner comprises a first section (5) with a greater cross-section of the opening, wherein the jaws (4) are provided and a second section (6) with a smaller cross-section of the opening, said cross-section joining the first section (5) and acting as a stopper for a nut (9) or a screw head.
