The invention relates to a method for operating a navigation system of a vehicle, especially a motor vehicle whereby, a route is calculated by means of a computing circuit based on the location of the vehicle, a digitally stored road map and a destination, and provided to the driver in the form of an acoustic and/or visual message, whereby a) information relating to the traffic situation of the route can be obtained via a receiver unit and a new travel time (t) resulting therefrom is calculated on the basis of a predetermined weighting factor (Gf) for a disruption and duration of a traffic disruption (Ls); b) a travel time (ta) for an alternative route is calculated in the same manner and if said travel time (ta) for the alternative route is shorter than the travel time (t) of the route, it is indicated to the driver. According to the invention, a correction value (K) for the weighting factors (Gf) is determined on the basis of the length of the traffic disruption (Ls). Depending on the correction value (Kw), a corrected weighting factor (Gk) is determined which is used to calculate a new travel time (t).
