The controller has a housing contg. an axially movable sliding valve element (111) for setting the gear ratios, whereby the sliding element is arranged to be axially movable in a bore in the housing and the ratios are set by varying the position of the sliding element. The sliding element is axially fixed with a securing element (170) before fitting the housing to the gearbox housing or to another part of the vehicle and the securing action is removed during fitting.
