Controlling pickling of a metal strip comprises subjecting the metal surface to electromagnetic radiation; measuring online and evaluating the electromagnetic radiation reflected from the metal as a spectrum. Process also comprises recognizing regions in which the metal is covered with an oxide layer; calculating the degree of scaling in the longitudinal and/or cross direction by integrating the results; and deriving suitable process control and/or regulating parameters for process optimization depending on the degree of scaling or carrying out an online adaptation of the process model.
