The seat adjuster has a release lever (20) in active connection with the cable (16) to unlock the adjuster when the backrest swivels free whilst a compensation spring (46) is provided acting between the cable and lever. The compensation spring when stressed increases the distance between the lever and the end of the cable remote from the lever. A second cable can be provided fixed on the lever and in active connection with the first cable through the compensation spring.
