PURPOSE: Disclosed is an elevator hoisting machine by providing a braking means housed in the radial inside of a cylindrical drive motor to impart a braking force to the drive motor, and setting a speed reducer for reducing and outputting the rotation of the drive motor to a sheave closely on one side of the drive motor and the braking means. CONSTITUTION: A braking means(27) for imparting a braking force to a permanent magnet(22) that is the rotation part of a drive motor(23) is housed between a substantially cylindrical intermediate member(26) spline-connected to multiple ends of an input shaft(21) and the drive motor(23) or in the radial inside of the drive motor(23) through the intermediate member(26), the input shaft(21) and a rotator(19). When the braking means(27) is housed in the radial inside of the cylindrical drive motor(23), the drive motor(23) is radially superposed on the braking means(27), a hoisting machine(11) is shortened by the axial length portion of the braking means(27) and thinned. Further, when a center crank type speed reducer(20) is adapted, the coaxial arrangement of the speed reducer(20) and the drive motor(23) can be facilitated.
