A method and apparatus for reducing a linear velocity of entrained particles in an air drilling return air stream. The method involves the step of directing the return air stream containing entrained particles at a cushion formed by a counter current of air. It is preferred that the linear velocity of the return air stream be lowered after impact with the counter current of air. It is also preferred that the counter current of air is created by redirecting a portion of the return air stream. The apparatus for accomplishing this results includes a hollow body having an interior target surface with a plurality of perpendicular baffles forming pockets for redirecting the return air stream. An outlet is provided which is of larger cross-section dimension than an inlet, thereby reducing the linear velocity of the return air stream after impact.
