A plastics pipe butt welding apparatus comprising a base (11), a pair of clamps (21) each adapted to receive an end portion of a length of plastics pipe (50), the clamps being supported from the base to be in opposed relation to each other whereby the ends of the end portions supported thereby are substantially coaxial, the clamps being capable of relative movement towards and away from each other, the clamps having an axial dimension to be able to clampingly engage a portion of the length of the respective end portion adjacent the end, a heating element (39) supported from the base adjacent a position intermediate of the clamps, the heating element being moveable from a first position between the clamps and a second position spaced laterally from the first position, the heating element having opposed planar faces which, when the heating element is in the first position, are each in opposed relation to the clamps and are transverse to the central axis of the end portions, the clamps being provided with handle means (33) to enable the clamps to be moved relative to each other. |
