PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source unit for an endoscope capable of obtaining clear still images by controlling the light quantity of illumination light so as to secure sufficient luminance at the time of recording still images. SOLUTION: At the time T<SB>1</SB>, the numerical aperture of a net diaphragm for making the illumination light from a light source pass through is raised from 35% at the time of moving image observation to 100%. Further, at the time T<SB>2</SB>, a current amount to be supplied to the light source is increased from 15(A) at the time of the moving image observation to 20(A). After the intensity of the illumination light emitted by the light source is increased and the light quantity of the illumination light passing through the net diaphragm is increased in such a manner, a control circuit of an electronic endoscope device accelerates the shutter speed of an electronic shutter on the basis of the luminance of an object (time T<SB>3</SB>). When the recording of the still images is ended, the supply current amount to the light source and the numerical aperture of the net diaphragm are returned to original values (time T<SB>4</SB>and time T<SB>5</SB>), and the shutter speed of the electronic shutter is returned (time T<SB>6</SB>).
