The water requirement of the reforming reaction and/or the water economy of the fuel cell system is directly coupled to an oxidation rate of a partial combustion of the water-containing medium or media mixture in an oxidation unit (6) upstream of the reforming reactor. Process for operating a fuel cell system comprises reforming a hydrogen-containing medium or media mixture in a reactor (9) having a water requirement with the addition of water to form a hydrogen-rich reformate; feeding the reformate via an anode feed (2) to the anode chamber (A) of a fuel cell (1) and reacting with oxygen from the cathode chamber (C) to form water. The water requirement of the reforming reaction and/or the water economy of the fuel cell system is directly coupled to an oxidation rate of a partial combustion of the water-containing medium or media mixture in an oxidation unit (6) upstream of the reforming reactor. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the operation process. |
