Repetition coded compression for highly correlated image data

To increase the compressibility of image data of an image, each pixel element of the data is compared with a previous element, and if the elements are equal a first value is recorded and if the elements are not equal a second value is recorded. The values are stored as a repetition coded compression bit plane 24, which when combined with corresponding stored repetition coded compression data values 22, permits original pixel data values to be reconstructed.
