The present invention relates to the control of braking in a motor vehicle that has an automatic vehicle speed control system, and particularly an adaptive vehicle speed control system. The vehicle speed control system includes a cruise controller that can automatically apply (AB) the vehicle brakes when vehicle speed (V) sufficiently exceeds a target speed (TS), for example when separation between the vehicle and a leading vehicle becomes too small. If a driver then presses (DB) the brake pedal during application (AB) of the brakes by the vehicle speed control system, then the application (AB) of the brakes by the vehicle speed control system is not immediately deactivated, but is progressively deactivated.
