A method of registering a pattern image with a reference image, which differ from each other by a rotation-scale-translation transformation, wherein the images are first transformed to a Fourier-Mellin domain and then converted to polar coordinates. The scale and rotation parameters of the transformation may then be found by summing the polar-log (log<SB>B</SB>(radius), angle) reference and pattern along the angle or log<SB>B</SB>(radius) axis to provide reference and pattern signatures. The signatures are then correlated to determine the required parameters. The translation vector may be determined by producing a set of potential vectors and selecting the one that gives the highest correlation. |
