PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress deterioration of a combustion condition and difficulty in efficiently reducing of Nox generated at combustion time without controlling exhaust introduced in a combustion chamber in a proper condition, in an internal combustion engine switching a combustion system. SOLUTION: An intake valve 19 is opened/closed during an exhaust stroke by an auxiliary cam ridge of an intake cam provided in an intake cam shaft 21, exhaust is introduced in a combustion chamber 16 based on this opening/ closing. This exhaust is distributed so as to generate concentration higher in accordance with going to a head part side of a piston 12 in the combustion chamber 16. An exhaust valve 20 is opened/closed during an intake stroke by an auxiliary cam ridge of an exhaust cam provided in an exhaust cam shaft 22, exhaust is introduced in the combustion chamber 16 based on the opening/closing. The exhaust is distributed almost uniformly in the combustion chamber 16. Based on a combustion system of an engine 11, an open/close characteristic of the intake valve 19 by the auxiliary cam ridge of the intake cam and an open/close characteristic of the exhaust valve 20 by the auxiliary cam ridge of the exhaust cam are controlled.
