PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal alignment agent improved in characteristics such as pretilt angle, aligning properties, residual electric charge, and voltage retention by using a polyamide compound containing organic residues each having a side chain having at least a specified number of carbon atoms. SOLUTION: An N-substituted polyamide represented by formula I (wherein R2 is an organic residue having a side chain having at least three carbon atoms and is represented by formula II, III, or the like) is used. The polyamide is dissolved in an aprotic solvent (e.g. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) to give a varnish composition with a concentration of 0.1-40 wt.%, which is applied to a substrate and dried at 150-300 deg.C to form an aligned liquid crystal film. In the formulas, R1 is a dicarboxylic acid-derived divalent organic residue; R3 and R4 are each H or a monovalent organic group provided the monovalent organic group accounts for at least 30 mol% of the sum of R3 and R4; R5 is H or a 1-12C alkyl; Y is a single bond or CH2; ring A is a benzene ring, or the like; Z is a single bond, CH2, or the like; (r) is 0-3; (s) is 0-5; (t) is 0-3; X1 is a single bond, CH2, or the like; R6 and R7 are each H, a 1-12C alkyl or a perfluoroalkyl; and (u) is 0-3. |
