PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize stabilized efficient recording by storing the information of defective recording elements, masking the recording data corresponding the elements indicated by that information, determining an element for complementing the recording data corresponding to the defective elements and using that element for recording. SOLUTION: Recording data concerning to defective recording elements which can not perform normal recording, e.g. a non-ejecting nozzle, present from the start of manufacture is masked in the EEPROM of a recording head and a representative mask pattern for determining other normal recording element being used for recording data is stored in a memory, e.g. an EEPROM. Information of the defective recording elements is then read out from the EEPROM and a mask pattern corresponding to the position of defective elements in a head is generated with reference to the representative pattern stored in the memory. Based on a mask pattern generating the recording data of the defective elements in the head and normal elements used for supplementing the recording, the recording data is replaced by new data and recording is executed based on the new data.
