PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel wire having superior productivity owing to shortened patenting time, excellent in softening resistance at high temperature, and best suited for spring use, and its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: The steel wire has a chemical composition consisting of, by weight, 0.50-0.75% C, 1.20-2.50% Si, 0.10-0.90% Mn, 0.01-0.90% Cr, 0.05-1.50% Mo, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities. Desired patenting temperature is 360-450 deg.C. Because this steel wire has superior softening resistance at high temperature, nitriding treatment can be applied at high temperature after spring working in the subsequent stage, and a spring excellent in fatigue limit can be obtained.
