PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of effectively giving a polymer and widely varying structures and characteristics by reacting a bishydrosilane compound having a specific structure with at least one of plural active hydrogen compounds in the presence of a catalyst containing a group VIII metal in the periodic table. SOLUTION: A bishydrosilane compound (A) represented by the formula such as 1,4-bis(dimethylsilyl)benzene, or the like, is reacted with at least one active hydrogen compound (B) represented by the formulae: Z-Y-Z and R6NH2 such as ethylene glycol and methylamine in the presence of a catalyst (C) containing a group VIII metal in the periodic table such as a Pd compound to give a silicone-containing polymer having a number-average mol.wt. of 1,000-1,000,000 and a mol.wt. distribution of 1.1-3.0. The component A/component B molar ratio is 1/5 to 5/1 and the component C is employed in an amount of 0.0001-10 wt.% based on the components (A+B). In the formulae, R1-R4 are each a 1-12C hydrocarbon; R5 is H or a 1-12C hydrocarbon; R6 is a monovalent organic group; Z is OH, SH, NHR5, or the like; and Y is a bivalent organic group.
